How to Translate Text Online

How to get a more accurate translation
Use short, complete sentences. Long sentences with several clauses are more likely to be translated wrongly.
Avoid idioms and slang. Say "I am very tired" instead of an expression that only makes sense in one language.
Choose the source language yourself for short phrases, names or mixed-language text.
Translate back to check. Paste the result in again with the languages reversed. If the meaning changed a lot, rewrite the original more simply.
Keep names and numbers outside the sentence where you can, and check them after translation.
When not to rely on machine translation
Do not use a free machine translation as the final version of a contract, legal notice, medical instruction, visa or official application, or anything where a mistake could cost money or harm someone. Use it to understand the text, then ask a qualified human translator for the final version.

Is machine translation accurate?
It is usually good enough to understand the meaning of a message, email or web text. It can mistranslate idioms, jokes, names, technical terms and ambiguous words, so have a fluent speaker check anything important.
Is my text private?
Your text is sent to the MyMemory translation service so it can be translated. ToolPond does not store it on its servers. Do not paste passwords, ID numbers or confidential documents.
Can it translate documents?

Why does auto detect get the language wrong?
